Hotel 101: The “Happy Room” Wasn’t Very Happy At All

According to its website, “Hotel 101 Manila is the newest business and leisure hotel to open in the Metro which offers convenience to all types of travelers. Hotel 101 has a spacious lobby, where guests can relax, conduct business, or meet with friends. Hotel 101 – Manila is flagship property among the Hotel 101 Management Corporation’s hotels and resorts in the Philippines. With the vision of being one of the best large-scale hotel brands in the country, the brand promises to be an alternative accommodation, with services and facilities that address the real needs of a fast-paced leisure and business environment.”

Last weekend, we decided to check-in to this hotel, simply because it was nearest Golden Phoenix Hotel Manila where we should’ve checked-in if only there was a room available, but unfortunately, there was none. My grandparents and aunts were checked into Golden Phoenix so we needed a place to stay that is near them, as my youngest brother was spending the weekend with us. I stayed for a night with Patrick and Edward. Booked through Traveloka, of course, because who wouldn’t? Traveloka’s discounts were amazing.

So, Hotel 101 calls their rooms “Happy Room” but guess what? As much as I want to sugar coat things, their “Happy Room” wasn’t very happy at all. Below are few reasons why I am and I am not satisfied with the kind of staycation I got with Hotel 101 Manila.

✔ Hotel 101 is walking distance to SM Mall of Asia.
The hotel is strategically located near SM Mall of Asia, and it’s actually walk-able, you can ride a cab if you want to and it’ll cost you around 60 PHP to get to the mall’s entrance. But if you don’t mind a 5 to 10 minutes walk, then this hotel is perfect if you want a place to stay near the mall.

✔ They provide a comfy bed with comfy clean sheets and super soft pillow plus a coooold airconditioning unit.
If there is one thing I’d always look for in a hotel room, that is how their beds and sheets and pillows are. Hotel 101 did not disappoint on this part. Their bed was huge and super comfy, plus, their sheets are clean! The pillows also felt like fluffy clouds. The AC was super cold. Really was able to get a good night sleep.

✔ The view from our hotel room at the 16th floor was amazing.
Being roomed in the 16th floor, facing the city was amazing. It gave us an unobstructed view of Makati skyline and EDSA. During the day, you can see cars rushing around, and at night, you really would fall in love with the city lights.

✔ Check in and check out is easy breezy.
Checking in and checking out was easy. It only took us around 2-3 minutes and we’re all good. The incidental fee was also relatively lower than other hotels. My aunts’ deposited 3,000 PHP incidental fee in Golden Phoenix, we only deposited 1000 PHP. They’ll give you back your deposited money given that you didn’t destroy any hotel property, or consumed any item from the mini bar.

✖ The room smelled like onions.
The room’s smell was not what we expected when we came in. Like seryoso, di ba dapat pag pasok mo palang marerelax ka na? This is not the case with us. When we got in the room, we were so displeased by how it smelled like freaking onions. Even when we opened the airconditioning unit, it smelled the same. It was frustrating.

✖ The attendants weren’t very much responsive to guest requests.
So because the room smelled like onions, I called in the operator and it took them a couple seconds to answer. Told them my request for maybe an air freshner because the room smelled bad and was told that housekeeping would come in a while. Five minutes passed, and no body come. I called housekeeping and told them my request, and was told that they will drop by to fix the issue. Again, nobody came in. On my third call, nobody picked up the phone. So I waited for someone outside and luckily, a housekeeping personnel passed by, he took a spray whatever and sprayed it on the aircon, but sad to say, the smell persisted. Checked-out without the issue being solved. Nope, did not ask for anything in return.

✖ The heater was broken.
Given that our room was super cold, I wanted to catch a warm bath but to my surprise, the heater was broken. Good thing it was already on our check-out date that I found out about this, because I was already very disappointed about their service and the smell of the room. The heater was fucking broken and I had to take a super cold shower. Should I not be disappointed? Fight me.

All in all, I’d still give them 3 out of 5 stars for trying. But if there are available rooms in other hotels near the mall again, I’d definitely make Hotel 101 a last option, a “no choice” choice. If you wanna see it for yourself, book here!
