My San Beda Experience: Speaking to Future Marketers

A day before I turned 21, I spoke to around 200 aspiring young marketers and advertisers from San Beda College Manila about advertising and experiential marketing. It was a good first time, and I felt so honored to be a part of this event, to think I was just someone who was just starting to build a name in the advertising industry.

With Sir Lester and Sir Brad

Alongside me were Mr. Lester Morales, Executive Creative Director of Catalytx Advertising and Sir Brad Geiser, a leading social marketer in the Philippines and Managing Director of Geiser Maclang Marketing Communications Inc.

Here are pieces of wisdom from my speech (all I could remember):

Still feels surreal. ๐Ÿ™‚

“I am Ellaine, junior copywriter. Likes books, basketball, music, coffee, butterflies. Pure blooded Pirata. (How brave of me to say this in SBC.)

“Experiential marketing means marketing in a way na damang dama mo yung pag aadvertise sayo, using your senses. Katulad ng sakit na damang-dama mo nung naseenzone ka ng crush mo, o nung iwan ka ng boyfriend o girlfriend mo.”

“Marketing and advertising are two different things, but both of them are beautiful. Parang kayo, magkakaiba pero alam nating lahat na there is good in all of us.”

“If you decide na papasukin nyo ang mundo ng advertising, well and good. Tibay ng loob, ng sikmura ng utak ng imahinasyon at ng mukha ang kailangan nyong baon. Hindi medals, hindi grades. Bonus nalang kung matalino talaga kayo, pero intelligence alone will not get you anywhere.”
“I was once like you guys, sitting in front of a speaker, wondering how the hell will I be someone in the future. But here I am in front of you, masyadong mabilis ang mga pangyayari, a few months after graduation, living the dream I have always just imagined. If there’s one thing I can leave you with, that is, to never settle for anything 2nd best. Dapat pag may ginagawa kayo, lalo na sa advertising world, kayo mismo mapapa-WOW nyo yung sarili nyo, because no one else will believe in you, if you don’t believe in yourself first. Hindi pwede yung “pwede na”. Even if the world tells you “you can’t.” believe you can, kahit walang naniniwala sa inyo, maniwala kayo sa sarili nyo. The sweetest success is when people say you can’t and you turn around to say “WATCH ME!” ”
